We are one step closer to an arbritrary cap on how much land the state can protect and manage with a key vote on the issue is coming up in the State House. Looking at the bigger picture, what protected state land is left could potentially be opened up to oil and gas development if the recommendations from a new legislative report are taken up.

The Michigan Constitution directs the legislature to protect natural resources as a "paramount" concern to the people of Michigan. Paramount means "above all else," the highest priority.

PWIR year in review 2011 Michigan LCV

Rick Snyder was inaugurated as Governor. Dozens of new environmental laws were passed (and rarely for the better). High speed rail is making it's way to Michigan. "Fracking" made it's way into most Michiganders' vocabularies. The Great Lakes were protected with a veto and improved with hundreds of millions of dollars in federal investment, and all while under constant threat from the Asian Carp.
