Legislators have their heads in the sand!
It's hard to travel to other states these days with my head held high. No, this has nothing to do with the Tigers, although I was heart broken last night.
This has to do with the complete lack of leadership being exhibited in Lansing these days.
I love this state dearly. I love the Great Lakes and the hard working people who live here and who are the very essence of our nation's manufacturing industry. I also cherish the many incredible institutions of higher learning that dot our state and the philanthropists who have made Michigan--her land, water and people--a priority.
But our state Legislature? I'm frustrated and down right ashamed by their lack of leadership, lack of vision and, in many cases, complete lack of common sense.
Yesterday's spectacle in Lansing regarding the proposal to build new coal-fired power plants is a case-in-point. As the Lansing State Journal aptly points out today, Michigan does NOT need to generate new electricity. Based on recent research conducted by the Michigan Public Service Commission, unless one of our main utility companies wants to close an existing facility, there is no need for new construction. Yet, we have Legislators writing letters to the Governor advocating for new coal plants and the Speaker of the House sputtering about this on the Capitol steps.
Come on guys, get smart! Read the Commission's report! We need our leaders think creatively about job creation, about the protection of our natural resources, about the future of our great state. Many thanks to the Lansing State Journal for getting it right!
