National LCV Holds Senators Accountable for their Dirty Deeds

In anticipation of a vote on federal energy and climate legislation this summer, National LCV has teamed up with three progressive organizations to launch a series of TV ads. The ads will praise Senators who have shown leadership in promoting clean energy legislation, and call out those Senators who have supported corporate polluters and Big Oil.

National LCV, along with the Sierra Club, Service Employees International Union, and VoteVets.org, will spend $11 million on the television ad campaign. The campaign is designed to inform constituents in targeted states what their Senators are up to; whether they are fighting for our clean energy future, or for the interests of Big Oil companies.

The ads, which are scheduled to begin airing next week, follow closely on the heels of the Senate’s June 10 vote on the Murkowski amendment. The amendment would have effectively crippled the Clean Air Act, and prevented the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. The amendment failed, but voters in key states will be made well-aware if their Senator supported Murkowski’s “Dirty Air Act”.

Our dependence on oil is dangerous; the spill in the Gulf is tragic proof of this. Regardless of the bitter, partisan climate in Washington, Senators need to make the sometimes tough decisions to support a clean renewable energy future, and organizations like National LCV will hold them accountable when they pander to polluting corporations, more concerned with the bottom line than our health and safety.
