New Petition Urges Action from Obama on Asian Carp

Most of the Great Lakes community seems to be able to agree: We need to do all we can to keep Asian carp from colonizing our freshwater seas. The Alliance for the Great Lakes is making it easy to take action, with a petition you can sign that will be sent to President Obama.

"The only viable long-term solution to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes is to permanently separate the Lakes and the Mississippi River System," the letter says.

"In the short-term, we ask you to order federal agencies to immediately describe and implement a 'channel-by-channel' control strategy with one unambiguous goal: to keep the Asian carp from establishing a population in the Great Lakes."

Will this campaign immediately convince Obama to take action, and support calls from states other than Illinois to close shipping locks, or separate the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds? Maybe not. Then again, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

To squeak, see the Great Lakes Action Center. The goal is 5,000 signatures.
