"Complete Streets" Legislation Headed to the Governor's Desk
Michigan’s “Complete Streets” legislation passed out of the Senate on Wednesday. The legislation has already passed the House, and now only requires the Governor’s signature to become law. HB 6151 and HB 6152 will make our streets more pedestrian friendly and handicap accessible, while encouraging the use of nonmotorized and public transportation. Said bill sponsor Rep. Pam Byrnes, “This legislation is good for the environment, good for the economy and promotes healthier lifestyles for our residents. It’s a win for everyone.”
The Complete Streets legislation will require the Michigan Department of Transportation to take all road users – including walkers and cyclists – into consideration when planning road development and construction. It will also create a Complete Streets Advisory Council, to assist with the planning and development of safe, pedestrian friendly streets.
In a state that faces challenges from obesity, inadeqate public transit, and a struggling economy, the Complete Streets legislation is a positive, bipartisan step towards making our cities safer, healthier, and revitalized. Said Michigan LCV Executive Director Lisa Wozniak, “It’s these small, positive changes that will get people outside, bring neighbors together, and make our cities lively and livable. We commend our legislators for passing Complete Streets, which will give residents the opportunity to enjoy their neighborhoods and towns in a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly way.”
