Adopt a Beach in September
Before you know, it will be Labor Day, and the unofficial end of summer.
Beaches in Michigan will still need your help, however. Take a moment to read about a Sept. 25 Adopt-a-Beach event being held around our Great Lakes by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. It's billed as the world's largest cleanup.
More than 5,000 volunteers are expected to participate, from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 25 in the coastal areas of Michigan, Illinois and Indiana, according to the Alliance, the former home of federal Great Lakes czar Cameron Davis.
Volunteers will be removing trash and collecting data on their findings (testing water quality and identifying pollution sources).
You can register for Adopt-a-Beach at the Alliance website.
There's a year-round Adopt-a-Beach program, too.
Labor Day is the end of regular beach monitoring in Michigan, by the way --- an issue that needs our year-round attention.
