Why Become a Michigan LCV Member?

Here are Four Simple Reasons to Join MI LCV:

1. Joining Michigan LCV will help get environmental heros elected in Michigan.

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters has an excellent track record of electing pro-environment leaders for Michigan. First, we research and interview candidates running for office at the city, county, legislative, and state levels. Then we choose which candidates to endorse.

Then we support those candidates by making phone calls, going door-to-door, and sending mailings to educate voters on the candidates’ pro-environment stance, or to reveal the anti-environmental records of their opponents.

As a result of our work in the 2006 elections, 29 of the 36 candidates whose campaigns we supported won. The single largest victory for Michigan LCV in 2006 was the re-election of Governor Jennifer Granholm. We played a significant role in highlighting the governor’s commitment to environmental protection, which stood in stark contrast to her opponent’s approach to environment and conservation issues. Michigan LCV is also particularly proud of our work to give Kate Ebli a huge victory in a highly-contentious State House. In another hard fought race we stood alongside Mary Valentine as she defeated her incumbent opponent.

In addition to these races, we helped across the state and all levels of government to ensure a greener Michigan through elected officials who are fighting for the environment.

2. Joining MI LCV will help make your voice more effective in Lansing

To help ensure that Michigan’s environment is represented in the Legislature, MI LCV is constantly tracking the developments in Lansing and is in communication with legislators every day.

MI LCV does not believe in “going it alone.” That’s why since 1999, we have coordinated a number of environmental and conservation organizations to get the job done. When working on lobbying in Lansing we work with a 501(c)(3) consortium of over 70 conservation groups called the Michigan Environmental Council (MEC). Speaking as one voice, we know the conservation community can get more done.

The MEC identifies key bills to support or oppose together. During the 2006 legislative session, the MI LCV worked side by side with MEC to successfully lobby for a package of new laws protecting Michigan’s water from threats of withdrawals and diversions.
During our 2006 Legislative Awards Breakfast this past May we honored four Legislators for their leadership on specific environmental legislation. We also acknowledged the other Michigan Legislators who received 100% on our 2005-2006 environmental scorecard.

3. Joining MI LCV will help hold our elected officials accountable.

Sadly, many of our current lawmakers have an appalling record on the environment. On the campaign trail, they talk a good talk about protecting our health and environment. But when they get into office, too many turn around and vote the other way.

So the Michigan League of Conservation Voters works to ensure that our elected officials keep their promises -- or expose them when they don’t. How do we do that? With MI LCV’s Environmental Scorecard for the Michigan Legislature.

Published after every legislative session, the Scorecard is a detailed accounting of how our lawmakers voted on key environmental bills.

Past Scorecards have shown how greed is putting our state’s future at risk. In 2005 – and in 2003 and 2002 – the Michigan Legislature has earned a failing grade on the environment because too many elected officials put corporate profits ahead of healthy communities. We’re hoping that our electoral victories in 2006 will help change this shameful tide.

MI LCV’s Environmental Scorecard helps Michiganders determine who deserves their vote the next time they go to the polls.

4. Joining MI LCV will help fight back against polluters who're threatening our future!

The saying “every vote counts” is especially true in state and local races, which are regularly decided by just a handful of votes. In the 2006 elections, some Michigan races were decided by less than half of a percentage point of the total vote.

By joining MI LCV, you’ll be supporting the “roll-up-your-sleeves” kind of work that helps pro-environment candidates in tight races win on Election Day.

Or, we can let apathy win. We can sit back and allow Michigan’s forests, rivers, and lakes die the death of a thousand cuts. A little pollution here. Some toxins there. A little more pavement just around the bend. It adds up.

Together we can fight back against apathy, and remind our elected officials to put people first—not the timber industry, opportunistic developers, or oil companies that fund their campaigns.

Join MI LCV and let’s work together to protect the Michigan dream!
