Great Lakes Drilling Ban Headed to House, and Hopefully the November Ballot

The disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has delivered a loud wake-up call regarding our dangerous addiction to fossil fuels, and Michigan lawmakers are answering that call. Last week, a measure to permanently ban drilling in the Great Lakes passed unanimously out of the House Great Lakes and Environment committee, and is headed to the floor of the House for a vote.

Two important bills to implement "Complete Streets" for bikers and other non-motorized transportation in Michigan have passed the House and are on on the Senate.

Asian Carp Caught, But the Fight Isn't Over

The day we all hoped wouldn't come is here: An Asian carp has been confirmed in Illinois. One was caught in Lake Calumet, which runs into Lake Michigan, officials announced today. 

"Michigan citizens have fought long and hard to prevent this incredibly detrimental invasive from invading the Great Lakes and destroying the ecosystem and a key portion of the Michigan economy," said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.

Constitutional Ban on Great Lakes Drilling Unveiled

Michigan has a ban on offshore drilling, but it's not enough. The lakes are only safe if future governors and state legislators don't change the rules. A constitutional ban, however, would bring long-lasting protection and piece of mind to our Great Lakes. That's the idea behind a voter-approved ban being proposed by the Democratic Caucus in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Michigan House Pedaling Good Policy With 'Complete Streets'

They call it "Complete Streets," and it means getting out of the house, out of the car and onto your feet or a bike to enjoy Michigan's great outdoors. Just in time for summer, the Michigan House of Representatives is calling on the state Department of Transportation to make Michigan streets more conducive to walking or biking.
