SUMMARY:Virtual Gala 2020: Equity and The Environment
DESCRIPTION:Michigan League of Conservation Voters invites you to the Michigan LCV Virtual Gala: Equity & The Environment on October 14th from 6 – 7.30 pm. Traditionally held in the heart of the Motor City\, COVID-19 has mandated a shift to Zoom\, but this event remains focused on priority issues impacting Detroit. \nRSVP today! \nEvent tickets start at a $50 suggested donation. All ticket purchases and sponsorships will go to support Michigan LCV’s critical work to protect our drinking water\, public health\, and our democracy\, and tackle the existential threat of our time: the climate crisis. \nThis has been an unprecedented year\, from a global pandemic that is having disproportionate impacts on communities of color and brutal racial police violence to widespread water affordability and contamination issues increasing our susceptibility to COVID-19. Michigan LCV recognizes the importance of electing leaders who will prioritize water protections and affordability\, environmental justice\, and the impacts of climate change.  \nOn October 14th\, Michigan LCV will honor three champions for their outstanding leadership on climate and water justice\, public health and equity\, and addressing the impacts of structural racism:  \nGovernor Gretchen Whitmer established the nation’s only Racial Disparities Task Force to address the disparate impact COVID-19 has had on communities of color\, with Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist leading the charge. The Whitmer/Gilchrist Administration declared racism a public health crisis\, put in place the most diverse leadership team in state history\, and have been leading boldly on climate change and water protections.  \nTheresa Landrum\, an incredible frontline leader\, has spent decades working to address public health issues and racial disparities in Michigan’s most polluted zip code: 48217. For decades\, Theresa has advocated for some of Detroit’s most impacted communities and is a leading voice for justice across Michigan. \n \nAlong with our honorees\, Equity and the Environment will feature environmental champions\, U.S. Senator Gary Peters\, U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin\, State Representative Tyrone Carter and a special performance by Detroit poet\, Natasha Miller you don’t want to miss! \nRESERVE YOUR TICKET OR BECOME A SPONSOR TODAY \nThank you to our sponsors\nAlliance for the Great Lakes \nAnglers of the Au Sable \nLisa and Jim Baker \nBank of Ann Arbor \nBell’s Brewery \nRosina Bierbaum* \nJoanie Binkow \nSandra Bitonti Stewart and Doug Stewart \nJanis Bobrin and Mike Allemang \nSusan and Oliver Cameron \nCherry Republic \nColumbia Asset Management* \nConsumers Energy \nDetroit Salt Company \nDTE Energy \nEnvironmental Consulting & Technology\, Inc. \nDavid and Wendy Falb \nBill and Kay Farr* \nJan Garfinkle and Michael O’Donnell \nEdie Goldenberg* \nElizabeth Goodenough and James G. SUMMARY:Line 5: Shutting Down the Ticking Time Bomb
DESCRIPTION:The outdated\, 68-year-old pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac is set to be shut down in May. Enbridge’s time has run out — but they aren’t going down without a fight. A Line 5 rupture in the Straits of Mackinac would impact 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline\, take years to clean up and devastate our Great Lakes economy. Shutting down Line 5 is crucial to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill. \nJoin Michigan LCV and Jeff Insko\, Professor of English at Oakland University\, Whitney Gravelle\, President\, Bay Mills Indian Community\, Riyaz Kanjii\, Tribal Litigator at Kanji & Katzen and Michigan LCV board member\, for a conversation on the steps to shutting down Line 5.

SUMMARY:Maintaining Food Access in the Face of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:How and where we get our food\, and the food that we eat\, has a significant impact on our health\, the climate\, and local economies. A healthy\, sustainable\, and affordable food system is critical to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious foods like fresh fruits and vegetables\, and that local economies and farmers benefit from their sale. Buying local produce and using sustainable farming practices also plays an important role in mitigating climate change by limiting the carbon footprint from agriculture production\, nutrient runoff\, and more. \nJoin Michigan LCV for a People\, Planet\, Public Health webinar with U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow\, Oran Hesterman\, Founder & CEO of Fair Food Network and Quiana “Que” Broden\, Founder & Executive Chef of The Kitchen by Cooking with Que in Detroit for a discussion about the ties between healthy food access\, sustainable farming\, and climate change — as well as the opportunities in Congress to improve our food systems and infrastructure.
