SUMMARY:COVID-19 & The Environment: Public Health is Under Attack
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has caused a public health crisis\, but it has also brought to light the health disparities that many of our Michigan communities have already been facing for decades. During this unprecedented and difficult time\, the federal government is exacerbating these concerns  by suspending the enforcement of environmental rules and regulations\, putting critical functions like water and air monitoring to a halt and giving polluters the green light to wreak havoc on our land\, air and water without consequence. Join us on Wednesday to learn more why it is important for Michigan’s leaders and citizens to stand up for environmental protections in the face of COVID-19 now more than ever. \nThis event will feature Michigan LCV Executive Director Lisa Wozniak\, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell\, and State Representative Abdullah Hammoud. \nYou can view a recording of the webinar here.

SUMMARY:Annual Holiday Party
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION\nThursday\, December 15 /  5:30 PM to 7:30 PM\nAnn Arbor Office / 3029 Miller Road\nRSVP HERE >>\nWe are located in the Forest Cove Complex in the third (last) building on the second floor and we have plenty of free\, well-lit parking. \nNo donation required or expected. \nThis event honors our generous volunteers\, members\, donors\, board of directors and team!\nYour support has allowed us to continue protecting Michigan’s land\, air\, and water. We would love for you to join us to enjoy food\, drinks\, and festive music to kick-off a season of holiday cheer! \n\n2016 Christine Green Award Honorees\nThis year we are especially thrilled to award two stellar individuals with the Christine Green Award for their commitment to protecting our state’s natural resources and the health of our communities. \n\nCameron Burden\nCameron first volunteered with Michigan LCV in 2014 when he helped collect pledge cards in support of the Clean Power Plan. Since then he has been a committed volunteer\, lending his free time to help protect Michigan’s land\, air\, and water. Although Cameron had never done door-knocking or phone-banking prior to his experience with Michigan LCV\, he jumped in head first to this incredibly important work. In the two years since he started volunteering\, Cameron has made countless phone calls and conversation to educate voters on clean energy policy legislation in Lansing\, recruited for multiple Michigan LCV field events including a town hall on energy policy\, and knocked on hundreds of doors in the successful efforts to elect Senator Gary Peters\, Representative-elect Abdullah Hammoud\, and Representative-elect Darrin Camilleri. With Southeast Michigan serving as a battleground for elections in 2016\, Cameron was integral to successfully electing two new conservation champions to the Michigan House. In total\, Cameron has completed over 60 volunteer shifts and helped Michigan LCV build relationships with members and volunteers across the state. \nGeorge Davis\nGeorge Davis is the Michigan LCV Board Secretary and has served on the board since 2014; in addition to serving with other environmental organizations across Michigan\, including Board President of the Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision\, Co-Chair of the Detroit Climate Action Committee Business and Industry Work Group\, and member of the Energy and Environment Committee of the Detroit Regional Chamber. George has actively committed to connecting talented and passionate individuals with Michigan LCV’s work–including recruitment of new members\, staff\, and board members. With the Flint Water Crisis being a critical issue in 2016\, George served on the Steering Committee of our Fourth Annual Innovation in Conservation Gala honoring many leaders committed to protecting our environment including Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha. George makes calls day after day to ensure that the Detroit community knows that Michigan LCV is at the forefront of the fight to protect what matters to the health and future of the state he loves and calls home.  \n  \n\n\nMany thanks to our generous in-kind donors for making this special evening possible!

Contact our development team at events@michiganlcv.org or 734-222-9650. \n\nMeet This Year’s Honorees\ntHE HONORABLE joe schwarz\, lifetime achievement award\n\nThroughout his many years in public office\, Dr. Schwarz was a dedicated conservationist and advocate for environmental health issues. As a Republican State Senator with a fifteen-year record of support for land\, air and water issues\, he was elected to represent Michigan’s seventh congressional district from 2005 to 2007 in the US House of Representatives. Today\, Dr. Schwarz continues to see patients at the Family Health Center in his home of Battle Creek and he teaches at the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. For all of these reasons and more\, join Michigan LCV on October 13 to honor this remarkable leader for a lifetime of dedicated service to our state.  \nLet’s not forget how fortunate we are to call Michigan home\, no matter our party affiliation. And\, let’s not forget that the update of our clean energy policy provides a real opportunity to bridge the partisan divide and set us on a path toward a cleaner future that our children\, grandchildren and Michiganders down the line can enjoy.” – excerpt from MLive op-ed co-authored by Congressman Schwarz and State Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer calling for clean energy policy that protects our Great Lakes \n\nDR. MONA HANNA-ATTISHA\, ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR\n\nDr. Hanna-Attisha earned national attention this year for her leadership on exposing the rising rates of lead poisoning in Flint children and the underlying and widespread Flint Water Crisis. Her dedication to her patients and her commitment to bringing to light an environmental health disaster forced leaders in Michigan to pay attention and be held accountable for failing to protect our children and our natural resources from lead contamination. \nSuddenly the city\, the state that used to be so proud\, was put out there as a sort of petri dish of pollution\, corruption\, austerity\, injustice. They called us tragic and they called us sad. And I can tell you I felt sad. And I felt angry. And I felt betrayed. But then I got to work\, because our focus had to be on our kids.” – Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha \nWant to hear what uncovering the crisis was like and what Dr. Hanna-Attisha and her colleagues are focused on going forward? Listen to the doctor herself tell the story in this powerful address she delivered at the 2016 Mackinac Policy Conference: \n \n\n\n\n\nDr. Abdul El-Sayed\, Public Official of the Year\nSince being named Executive Director and Health Officer for the Detroit Health Department in 2015\, Dr. El-Sayed has already set himself apart as a champion for clean air and healthy families. From building on the city’s efforts to track and prevent lead poisoning in Detroit kids to holding the Marathon Petroleum refinery accountable for controlling its sulfur-dioxide emissions\, Dr. El-Sayed has proven himself to be a champion for Detroit families and an example of public service at its best. In a community striving toward a brighter future\, the people of Detroit are lucky to have Dr. El-Sayed as one of their strongest advocates. \nThis assault on public health in Detroit has to stop. Detroiters have suffered disproportionately from diseases that are far less common just eight miles northward. For example\, the life expectancy gap between men in Wayne and Oakland counties is nearly six years.” – excerpt from this Detroit Free Press op-ed authored by Dr. El-Sayed in opposition to a proposal to weaken air pollution limits for the Marathon Petroleum refinery in Southwest Detroit. \n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our many generous sponsors!\nSponsorship opportunities are still available for this year’s event! Find more information on event sponsorship here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuperior Sponsors\n\n*(Gift Made to Michigan LCV Education fund) \n\n*(Gift Made to Michigan LCV Education fund) \n\nLARRY BELL\n  \n\nMichigan Sponsors\n\n \n \nJANIS BOBRIN AND MIKE ALLEMANG\nDOUG GLANCY*\nKIRK MARTIN*\n\nJENNIFER POTEAT AND MIKE STAEBLER\n \n\nErie Sponsors\n\n\n \n*\n*\n\n \n* \n*\n \n \n\n\n* \n \n\nDR.
