And we’ll show you two ways to help. Together, we can be a voice for change and protect Michigan’s land, air, water, public health, and democracy.
The Trump administration just issued another order forcing the J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Michigan to stay open – the fifth time the administration has extended the plant’s operations after initially forcing it to stay open last year, despite the fact that the plant was supposed to be retired in May 2025.
Keeping this outdated, polluting coal plant open has already cost $259 million as of the end of June, and the costs just keep growing. Consumers Energy, which owns the plant, says operating Campbell costs more than $640,000 every single day – costs Consumers is trying to pass on to its customers.
Michiganders are already paying the highest energy costs in the Midwest. We shouldn’t be forced to spend hundreds of millions more propping up an outdated coal plant that was already approved for retirement.
Campbell’s closure was projected to save Consumers Energy customers $600 million by 2040. Trump’s latest extension alone will eat away at more than half of those projected savings.
Michigan families should not be forced to pay for outdated fossil fuels while Trump pumps up profits for the fossil fuel industry.
