Michigan LCV condemns House GOP’s destructive reconciliation bill
Legislation seeks to cut clean energy investments, tax credits, environmental protections, and devastate U.S. economy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today condemned the massively destructive GOP-led budget reconciliation bill that seeks to cut clean energy investments and environmental protections and give handouts to fossil fuel companies and polluters ahead of a planned committee vote to move the bill to the House floor.
“This bill is nothing short of a full-scale attack on Michigan families, the health of our communities, our economy, and our future,” said Bentley Johnson, federal government affairs director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Slashing clean energy investments and environmental protections while handing out favors to corporate polluters is reckless and will raise energy costs for Michigan families. Michiganders are already feeling the effects of climate change and rising costs – we need Congress to reject this harmful legislation and stand up for the people and places we love.”
According to new analysis, the reconciliation bill would increase household energy costs by an average of $120 annually over the next five years – and up to $230 in the next decade. This deeply misguided proposal, designed to benefit wealthy polluters, would stall Michigan’s ability to build the clean energy infrastructure needed to meet rising electricity needs and could cost the U.S. economy more than 830,000 jobs by 2030.
Additionally, a recent report from the Center for American Progress finds that eliminating nearly all federal clean energy investments – a central focus of the bill – would significantly raise electricity rates and increase gas prices by 25 to 37 cents per gallon. Over the next ten years, that would cost Michigan households and families across the country more than $400 billion in energy expenses, including a projected $110 spike in electricity costs in 2026 alone.
