DTE Energy is trying to hold Michiganders ransom for a profit.
Just months after securing a $242 million rate hike earlier this year, DTE is once again asking state regulators to approve a $474 million rate increase.
Now, in what can best be described as a “ransom note,” DTE claims it will “pause” future rate hikes, but only after they secure this $474 million and if its controversial data center project in Saline Township, MI, moves forward.
DTE has repeatedly raised its rates in recent years while reporting record profits of $1.46 billion in 2025 and paying its CEO more than $14 million. Meanwhile, the massive Saline Township data center project tied to DTE’s new proposal was approved through a fast-tracked, highly secretive process, with heavily redacted contracts and limited public oversight.
Michiganders are purposefully being left in the dark while we grapple with the highest costs for energy in the Midwest and some of the worst reliability in the country.
