‘Our Bills Are Too Damn High!’ campaign reaches $13M in spending up-and-down the ballot

Campaign on track to reach 1.75 million doors knocked by Election Day for Abdul El-Sayed, Jocelyn Benson; ads launched in CD-04, CD-07, CD-10

LANSING – A trio of partners operating under the ‘Our Bills Are Too Damn High!’ banner will hit $13 million in spending – layering massive door-to-door voter contact, digital and TV advertising across the state.

The central thematics of this effort revolve around skyrocketing energy bills, the threat of data centers, and utility greed – creating clear contrast for voters on who is standing with them.

The effort this week (as of 10/25) crossed 1.5 million door knocks in five pivotal counties (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Kent and Ingham), and is on track to reach 1.75 million by Election Day.

“It’s hard to deny that this issue has electrified races up-and-down the ballot, and voters are telling us that they’re fed up with DTE and Consumers and that they’re voting out politicians who take their money and stand by while we suffer,” said Bob Allison, deputy director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “The bill has come due for these monopoly utilities and their reckless data center projects. The lawmakers who have protected them for years will now answer to voters.”

The program was officially launched in September by LCV Victory Fund, Conservation Voters of Michigan PAC, and the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy.  It is one of Michigan’s largest field-based campaigns this election cycle. It also includes targeted congressional races, CD-04 (Sean McCann), CD-07 (William Lawrence) and CD-10 (Christina Hines).

New U.S. Senate and Congressional ads began airing last week from the LCV Victory Fund as part of this ongoing campaign include:

  • Senate: “Owns,” a contrast ad highlighting Rogers repeated votes to drive up prescription drug costs after decades of being bought and paid for by Big Pharma, while Abdul El-Sayed is committed to taking on lobbyists to lower costs.
  • MI-04: “We Know,” an ad exposing votes Bill Huizenga took to give himself and data centers tax breaks.
  • MI-07: “Sign Up,” a testimonial ad featuring Richard, a long time Republican who is voting for Will Lawrence because he is standing up to data centers as they drive up energy costs and fight to protect clean water.
  •  MI-10: “Dress Up,” a spot opposing Mike Bouchard, highlighting his history as a lobbyist and his ties to Big Pharma and healthcare insurers.

The LCV Victory Fund program previously included a $1.5 million ad blitz launched in late September that focused on Congressman Rogers’ history of supporting cost hikes on utilities, groceries, and prescriptions. In total, LCV Victory Fund is on track to spend nearly $6 million in the Michigan Senate race and an additional $3.4 million in congressional races.

Additionally, the Conservation Voters of Michigan PAC (CVM PAC) is investing over $4.1 million in programming to win the gubernatorial election and flip control of the state Legislature.

It launched a new ad this week, “No Service” highlighting John James’ cozy ties to DTE and Consumers Energy as our bills have skyrocketed.

CVM PAC also ran a gubernatorial ad in September, entitled “Backwards & Poor,” that spotlighted James’ track record of taking money from data center developers and supporting Donald Trump’s AI agenda.

The CVM PAC in October expanded its legislative program to include additional state House and Senate districts (HD46 and SD32), delivering an extra $200,000 in digital ads and mail.

“Michigan is ground-zero in the raging debate over data centers and the toxic influence of utility and Big Tech money in our politics,” said Sara Schreiber, Senior Vice President of Campaigns for the LCV Victory Fund. “Voters are ready for change and they know that it starts with electing people who will stand up to Donald Trump’s cost-spiking energy agenda and deliver more reliable, affordable clean energy to bring our bills down.”
