Attorney General Nessel files lawsuit to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for skyrocketing energy costs

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today applauded Attorney General Dana Nessel for filing a lawsuit in federal court against the “Fossil Fuel Cartel,” which includes companies such as BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Shell. The case aims to hold these fossil fuel companies accountable for violating Federal and State Antitrust laws, which has led to skyrocketing energy costs for Michiganders. 

“We know the fossil fuel industry has the primary goal of maximizing profits, and that comes at the expense of Michiganders’ pocketbooks and health,” said Lisa Wozniak, CEO and President of Michigan LCV. “Michiganders are feeling the impacts of skyrocketing energy costs and we should not have to struggle while fossil fuel companies rake in massive profits year after year. We applaud Attorney General Nessel for standing up to big polluters and working to rein in rising energy costs and hold corporate polluters accountable.”

Nessel’s lawsuit argues the cartel conspired to limit competition, suppress renewable energy development, and drive up energy costs for Michigan residents, contributing to an energy affordability crisis.
