Attorney General Dana Nessel continues to secure Flint residents justice for the detrimental Flint Water Crisis that began in 2014. AG Nessel announced a $53 million civil settlement against Veolia North America for the engineering company’s role in the crisis. The engineering company failed to identify and address corrosion control treatment issues, which directly contributed to worsening and prolonging Flint’s water crisis. This settlement will provide financial payment to an estimated 26,000 individuals, including a significant number of children who faced heightened health risks due to lead exposure.

This $53 million builds on Attorney General Nessel’s previous efforts to deliver justice to Flint residents for this preventable crisis. In 2020, AG Nessel announced an over $600 million settlement for Flint, the largest civil settlement in Michigan state history. AG Nessel stated, “While no amount of money can fully repair the damage caused to the Flint community, these funds will provide additional resources to those directly impacted, especially Flint children, by this preventable crisis.”

Attorney General Nessel’s continued pursuit of accountability sends a clear message that environmental injustice will not be tolerated and that those responsible for the preventable water crisis must be held fully accountable.
