And we’ll show you two ways to help. Together, we can be a voice for change and protect Michigan’s land, air, water, public health, and democracy.
Join Michigan LCV to contact our legislators to get the Campbell Coal Plant shut down! Tell our legislators to stand up against Trump and shut down the old, dirty, expensive plant we do not need.
Consumers Energy’s J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Michigan was supposed to close this year, saving ratepayers money, cutting dangerous air pollution, and accelerating Michigan’s shift to clean energy. But in a last-minute move, the Trump administration stepped in and ordered the plant to stay open through the summer, citing a made-up “energy emergency” and ignoring the utility’s closure plan and the decisions of state regulators.
Closing the coal plant was in the works for years, and its closure was expected to save Michigan ratepayers $600 million by 2040.
The Trump administration’s reckless decision is a disaster for our climate and our wallets. Campbell is one of the most expensive coal plants in the Midwest to run, and according to experts, the cost estimates of keeping it open could exceed $100 million. Meanwhile, Consumers Energy is asking state regulators for a $436 million rate hike, which would raise residential electric bills by more than 13%. Running Campbell longer only adds to the burden Michigan families are already facing.
