Federal Energy Bills Relief Act would cut energy bills, promote clean energy

Bill aims to reverse rollbacks to clean energy incentives, lower household energy bills, and more

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters released the following statement today in support of the Energy Bills Relief Act, federal legislation introduced in Congress to address the energy affordability crisis impacting Michiganders and people across the country. The legislation would help lower household energy bills by undoing Trump administration rollbacks of clean energy investments, modernize and expand the U.S. electric grid and protect energy customers from price hikes from data centers.

“At a time when electricity rates are soaring in Michigan and demand is rising, this legislation will ensure we are investing in the cheapest and fastest to build energy sources while upgrading our grid,” said Bentley Jonson, federal government affairs director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Clean energy, like wind and solar, is the cheapest energy around and the fastest to bring online. We urge lawmakers in Congress to pass the Energy Bills Relief Act to upgrade our grid, rein in rising energy costs and quickly bring online affordable, clean energy to meet rising demand.”

The Energy Bills Relief Act will:

  • Cut energy costs for working families and protect them from utility shutoffs
  • Reverse rollbacks on clean energy
  • Lower energy bills for American families
  • Expediting the process of connecting new energy sources to the grid
  • Build out a 21st-century electrical grid
  • Develop cheap energy responsibly on public land & waters
  • Protect consumers from electric price hikes from large energy users, like data centers
  • Promote local collaboration for successful deployment

The following six members of Michigan’s congressional delegation are original sponsors of the Energy Bills Relief Act:

  • Rep. Debbie Dingell
  • Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet
  • Rep. Hillary Scholten
  • Rep. Haley Stevens
  • Rep. Shri Thanedar
