Justice James Brickley was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1982 by Gov. William Milliken (R). He was elected to the Court in 1984 and re-elected in 1988 and 1996. He retired from the Court in 1999.

Justice Brickley earned his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Detroit and a master’s in law from New York University. Throughout his career, he was a Special Agent for the FBI, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Wayne County, a United States Attorney, President of Eastern Michigan University, Lieutenant Governor of Michigan under Gov. Milliken, and an adjunct professor of government and law.
