Michigans Energy Future is Bright

Michigan’s future is bright because of members like you

Michigan LCV members were instrumental in moving Michigan toward a clean energy future that reduces pollution in our air, lowers our electricity costs, and produces good paying clean energy jobs for years to come. You were involved in the process from beginning to end, and should be incredibly proud of the bipartisan cooperation that resulted in passage of a new clean energy policy for Michigan.

Use this page to explore how the 2016 energy plan came to be, what it means for the future of energy generation here in Michigan, and what it means for you and your family.

We did it together

Over the three years leading up to the bill’s final passage in 2016, Michigan LCV worked with a broad coalition of partners to educate lawmakers on the benefits of clean energy. We empowered and mobilized voters across the state to participate in the conversation about how Michigan could reduce pollution to our air and water while creating thousands of new, clean energy jobs.

What does the plan mean for Michigan?

MORE RENEWABLE ENERGY

Energy providers in Michigan will be expected to produce at least 15% of our state’s energy needs from renewable sources by 2021.

LESS ENERGY WASTE

The energy plan requires our electricity providers to increase energy efficiency by 1% every year, with incentives to go even further to reduce waste.

MORE RESIDENTIAL SOLAR

The plan sets up a fair process to ensure residential solar producers are justly compensated for the energy they sell to the grid.

How will this benefit our families and our communities?

LOWER UTILITY BILLS

Reducing energy waste is a no-brainer that saves Michiganders $4 for every $1 invested. Plus, renewable energy is now consistently cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives.

BETTER HEALTH

Aging coal-fired power plants release air emissions that harm our health. As we produce more clean energy, these harmful pollutants will no longer affect Michigan families.

CLEANER AIR

By transitioning away from dirty sources of energy, like coal, Michigan will reduce the flow of damaging pollution into the air our communities breathe and the water we all drink.

BRIGHTER FUTURE

Developing clean, renewable energy right here in Michigan puts our state on track to reduce carbon pollution and build a brighter future for our kids and grandkids.

Bipartisan collaboration worth celebrating

Through many months of hard work and determination of Michigan LCV and our members, we were able to pass landmark clean energy reforms in 2016. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle crafted a bipartisan compromise that protects our clean air and drinking water, promotes economic investment, and moves Michigan toward cheap, reliable energy sources.” – Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director
