Trump executive order an attack on Michigan’s right to cheaper energy, will raise costs

Latest Trump executive order attempts to strip states of their right to chart their own energy future, force higher cost energy sources on customers

ANN ARBOR – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement in response to an executive order issued by the Trump administration on Tuesday that attempts to undermine Michigan’s ability to make our own energy decisions and invest in cleaner, cheaper energy sources, like wind and solar. The order is an escalation of the Trump administration’s attempts to force the United States to use outdated coal-fired power plants for energy generation, which would lead to higher energy costs for Michiganders and more pollution in our air, land, and Great Lakes.

“Michigan is at the forefront of a more balanced energy future that uses more affordable clean energy sources like wind and solar to lower our energy costs, create good-paying jobs, and protect our air and water,” said Bentley Johnson, federal government affairs director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Donald Trump’s latest executive order props up outdated coal-fired power plants and will raise energy costs for Michigan’s families and small businesses. Here in Michigan, we know what’s best for our state, which is why we bolstered our clean energy sector and are investing in technologies that will lower energy bills and lead to the eventual transition to a cleaner, cheaper energy future for all.”
