Letters to the editor (often called op-eds or LTEs) are a powerful tool to voice an opinion in your community and make your voice heard. By submitting a letter to your local newspaper, you can help shape public opinion and push back against the Trump administration’s harmful environmental, social, and economic policies.
Why write an LTE?
- Reach thousands of readers in your community
- Influence decision-makers who monitor public sentiment
- Provide factual, persuasive arguments that counter disinformation
How to write an effective LTE
- Keep it short – Most newspapers or online media outlets have word limits for opinion pieces (usually 250-500 words). Get to the point quickly.
- Make it personal – Share why this issue matters to you as a Michigander, an American, or a member of your local community.
- Make it relevant – try to reference a news story the paper you are submitting to recently reported on.
- Use clear, persuasive language – Avoid jargon and make your argument accessible to your audience.
- Include a call to action – Urge elected (or non-elected) decision-makers to take action or encourage your community to get involved.
- Submit to the right outlet – Check your media outlets’ submission guidelines and follow their instructions.
