Tell Your Lawmaker: Take Action on Toxic PFAS

Michiganders deserve clean, safe water, but across our state, toxic PFAS contamination is threatening public health, contaminating lakes and rivers, and putting our health at risk. 

Michigan now has more than 300 known PFAS contamination sites, with thousands more potential sites still untested. Meanwhile, fish consumption advisories warn people not to eat what they catch from waterways because of the dangerous “forever chemicals” that don’t break down naturally and cause serious health issues, including cancer. 

Now, a package of bills in the Michigan Legislature would take important steps to address the toxic PFAS crisis in our state. House Bills 5890-5898 would: 

• Ban the use of toxic PFAS chemicals in many household and personal care products, helping reduce everyday exposure
• Create a grant program to support farmers whose land, water, livestock, or crops have been impacted by PFAS contamination 
• Help fund assistance for PFAS-impacted farmers by directing proceeds from environmental fines and penalties toward the new grant program 
• Help ensure Michiganders have access to safe drinking water when PFAS are found in a water source
• Require strict standards for PFAS testing for sewage sludge and other biosolids spread on farm fields, preventing further contamination 
• Codify the existence of the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) to improve statewide coordination and response, and citizen advisory working groups to ensure impacted residents have a voice in how Michigan tackles the toxic PFAS crisis 

For too long, polluters have avoided accountability while impacted communities have been left to deal with the consequences. These bills represent a critical opportunity to better protect our health, our water, and our future from toxic PFAS contamination.
