Key Information
HB 5333 would discourage Michigan from being a dumping ground for trash from Canada and other states. It would also support cleaning up Michigan’s 24,000+ contaminated sites, reducing exposure to harmful pollutants and unlocking opportunities for economic redevelopment. By increasing Michigan’s tipping fees to $1.25 per ton, this bill aims to reduce trash imports while generating an estimated $20 million annually. Michigan leads the nation in the amount of trash per resident at 68.3 tons, 72% higher than the national average, in part due to our lowest-in-the-region $0.36 per ton tipping fee.
